Who is a candidate for sedation dentistry?

You’re likely to be a good candidate if you experience dental anxiety, are fearful of needles, have a sensitive gag reflex, or are interested in combining several treatments or procedures into one visit. Patients who are anxious about a planned oral surgery procedure or those with special needs may also be candidates.

What is nitrous oxide and how does it work?

A form of light sedation, nitrous oxide (also known as laughing gas) is combined with oxygen and is breathed in via a mask that’s placed over a patient’s nose, creating a relaxing, calming effect. Our team will customize your sedation level throughout your appointment, and once your treatment or procedure is complete, the effect of the gas will quickly begin to wear off.

What is oral sedation and how does it work?

A viable solution for many people who experience dental anxiety or fear, oral sedation comes in pill form and enables patients to remain awake during their procedure while experiencing a deeply relaxed state. Though the sedative dosage can vary from minimal to moderate, patients generally remain responsive to questions and requests from our team, though some may become groggy or fall into a light sleep when treated with moderate oral sedation.

What is IV sedation and how does it work?

IV sedation is administered through a vein, quickly provides a calming effect, and can be continually adjusted throughout an appointment to meet the sedation needs of a patient. This sedative option helps patients remain conscious and responsive during their appointment while also ensuring that they feel relaxed throughout their visit.

How do I know which sedation option is right for me?

Following an in-depth assessment of your current and past medical history, our specially trained dentist will recommend the sedation option(s) that are most medically appropriate for your unique needs.

Will I still require anesthetic (freezing) during my visit?

Regardless of the sedation option you receive, it’s very likely that patients will need local anesthetic – a numbing medication that’s applied to the area our dentist will work on – to control any pain caused by a dental treatment or procedure.
