Dental Sedation Helps You Undergo Dental Treatments Without Stress

Used to help patients who experience dental fear and/or anxiety, strong gag reflexes, a fear of needles, and more, at Dr. George Daguiam Dentistry Awake or Asleep in Orillia, we know that dental sedation enables patients to receive the diligent oral care they need while ensuring they remain calm and comfortable throughout their visit.

What is dental sedation and how do I know which option is best for me/my child?

Dental sedation is the use of medication to help patients who have anxiety or fear about dental procedures. The three main types of dental sedation are nitrous oxide, IV sedation, and oral sedation. While patients are welcome to make requests about the type of sedation they'd prefer, our team is also happy to help you choose the best type of sedation for your individual needs.

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) is a gas that, once inhaled, begins to relax you. It is mixed with oxygen and delivered through a small mask that fits over your nose. You will remain awake and able to respond to questions or directions from our dentist during your appointment and you’ll be able to drive yourself home after your visit is complete.

IV Sedation

IV sedation is administered via a small needle. It will make you feel very relaxed and may even make you fall asleep. You will not be able to drive yourself home after the procedure, so you will need to arrange transportation. The effects of IV sedation can last several hours, so having someone monitor in the hours following your appointment is necessary.

Oral Sedation

Oral sedation involves taking a pill prior to your appointment. The most common oral sedation medication is diazepam (Valium), but other drugs may also be used. This type of sedation causes patients to feel sensations of relaxation and calm, though they remain awake and able to respond to questions or directions from our dentist.
